City of Cupertino posts details of proposed new Apple campus

The City of Cupertino posted on its site details of Apple’s proposed new campus. The post also includes Apple’s proposal documents on site plan, landscaping, floor plans and rendering. The City of Cupertino is quite certain to approve Apple’s proposal, with the spaceship like building expected to complete in 2015.

Apple removed white MacBook

With the launch of new MacBook Air, Apple today removed white MacBook from the online Apple Store. However Apple has informed its reseller that the white MacBook will still be available but only for education institutions.

There is no suggestion if there will be a lower end MacBook replacement. The new MacBook Air 11.6 inch model at $999 is now the cheapest Apple notebook.

Apple posts another record-breaking quarterly results: $7.31 billion profit on $28.57 billion revenue. Sales figure wise, Apple shipped 20.34 million iPhones, 9.25 million iPads, 3.95 million Macs and 7.54 million iPods.

How to key in Apple icon  character

To enter the Apple icon character  into your text on the Mac, press Option-Shift-K. Technically this character is Unicode U+F8FF which is part of Unicode’s “private use area”. Missing features in Mac OS X Lion

Apple is slated to release Mac OS X Lion 10.7 later this month. Mac OS X Lion boosts over 250 new features such as Mission Control, Launchpad, Versions, FaceTime HD, AirDrop, Multi-Touch Gestures, Resume, Auto-Save, Full-Screen Apps etc. At just $29.99 for the upgrade, Mac OS X Lion is a no brainer upgrade for Mac users.

Apple also drops some features out of Mac OS X Lion compared with Mac OS X Snow Leopard. These ‘missing features’ will be kept intact If you’re upgrading from Snow Leopard. If you install Mac OS X Lion from scratch, these tools will be gone.

iSync

iSync is the utility that allows you to sync the information on your Mac with Bluetooth devices. For example, iSync plug-in software is used in order to sync calendar and contacts info on your Mac over to your Nokia phone. Apple uses iTunes for its content sync, iSync is meant for supporting third party hardwares and it meant little for Apple to support iSync further.

Front Row

Front Row is the TV-oriented media center playback app for your photos, music and movies in iTunes. Front Row was released in 2005 together with an IR remote to control its functionality. Apple has stopped bundling IR remote with iMacs and other models, signaling a lack of interest in Front Row.

It is not a surprised that Front Row is dropped from Mac OS X Lion. AppleTV is the device of choice for streaming iTunes content, and Front Row functionality is now the interface for AppleTV.

Rosetta

Rosetta is the piece of system software within Mac OS X that enables software compiled for PowerPC processor to run on Intel Macs. Rosetta is not supported in Mac OS X Lion, thus PowerPC software such as Appleworks, Office 2004, Quicken 2007, Photoshop CS 4 etc will not work under Mac OS X Lion.

Java runtime

Java runtime used to come preinstalled in Mac OS X, but it is no longer the case with Mac OS X Lion. Apple no longer maintains and supports its version of Java runtime for Mac, instead Java for Mac will be part of OpenJDK going forward.

When you attempt to run a Java app, Mac OS X Lion offers to look online for a version it can install.

Adobe Flash

Similar to Java runtime, Mac OS X used to come preinstalled with Adobe Flash and plugins. Starting with Mac OS X Snow Leopard for MacBook Air, users are advised to download Flash software from Adobe website if required.

Retail box

Mac OS X Lion will be available only from Mac App Store. There is no retail box that you can buy.

Mac OS X Server

There is no separate Mac OS X Server for Lion. Lion Server will be an add-on to Mac OS X Lion. There will be a $49.99 download of a software bundle of server components directly from the Mac App Store. The pricing is a sharp contrast with $499 for Mac OS X Snow Leopard Server.

Core 2 Duo 64-bit processor required

Mac OS X Lion requires 64-bit CPU, with a minimum Core 2 Duo processor. Any Mac bought within the last 5 years should have the Core 2 Duo CPU minimum. Snow Leopard is able to run under older Core Duo.

USB 3

There is no official USB 3 driver under Mac OS X Lion. Understandably as there is no Mac with a USB 3 port yet as Thunderbolt is the next-gen device interface for Mac.

Top gadgets in 2010

We present here the top gadgets in 2010, more retrospective than for the shopping bug in us. Being an Apple blog, it is predictable that majority products in the list are from Apple. But we are not the only one, Time magazine recently selected 4 Apple products for its Top 10 Gadgets in 2010. Here we go:

1. iPad

Make no mistake, iPad is really magical. It invigorates the whole tablet computing. A trend setter that redefines a whole industry.

2. MacBook Air

The new generation MacBook Air is a milestone product, or another milestone product for Apple in 2010. It propels MacBook Air from a niche Mac into the mainstream. And it contains hint of design choice for Apple for its future notebook Mac.

3. IPhone 4

This is easy choice, as there is little not to love about the new iPhone other than its antenna.

4. Apple TV

With over 1 million units sold, Apple’s hobby finally grows up a little. At just $99, it is one of the most affordable Apple gadget one can own.

5. Panasonic Lumix GH2

Panasonic’s top of the line mirrorless large sensor m4/3 camera is the best-in-class hybrid still and video camera you can buy today. At just $999 for the kit with 14-42mm lens, its video competes with Canon and Nikon DSLR that easily cost much more. Still photography is no slouch either, with fast auto focus and usable ISO up to 6400.

6. Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin iPod Dock & Speaker

You can expect nothing less when an high-end audio manufacturer enters the iPod speaker market. At about $600, it is not exactly affordable, but the sound does not disappoints.

7. XBox Kinect

Kinect sensor is an add-on for XBox 360 that breaks new ground by making your body the controller for the games. So far there are no platform game that defines this new way of man-machine interaction, but Kinect definitely has lots of potential.

8. Oppo BDP-93 Universal Network 3D Blu-ray Player

Oppo has created a name for itself among audio visual enthusiasts, with its great quality DVD/Blu-ray player at mid-price budget. The price is about $500, much more than a typical Samsung or Sony Blu-ray player, but is considered a bargain for its high end components, quality and universal format support. The latest BDP-93 is one up its ante over the popular BDP-83 Blu-ray player with Netflix streaming, build-in wireless and 3D support.

9. Kindle 3G+Wi-Fi

This is the all-time best selling product in Amazon’s history, and for good reason. Finally an ebook reader that is as good if not better than paper.

Apple confirmed iOS New Year alarm bug

Another year, another alarm bug in Apple’s iOS. This time it is pertaining to non repeating alarms that your set in 2010 for alerts on January 1 and 2. This is also the first self-healing bug of the year, as the alarm will work properly beginning January 3.

Apple spokesperson Natalie Harrison confirmed to Macworld that Apple is aware of the problem. “We’re aware of an issue related to non repeating alarms set for January 1 or 2,” Harrison said. “Customers can set recurring alarms for those dates and all alarms will work properly beginning January 3.
