This issue appears to be going away with the upcoming iOS 4.1 release expected on Sept 8 next week, Lifehacker posted a video test comparing an iPhone 3G running iOS 4.0 with one running the iOS 4.1 (likely the Gold Master release for developers).

Although not a scientific examination, it is clear from the video that there is marked improvement running iOS 4.1 on iPhone 3G. For all the added new features, iOS 4.1 is finally a worthwhile upgrade for iPhone 3G owners.

There are more than 50,000 apps in Apple’s App Store, many doubt if it is still possible to make money developing apps for the iPhone and iPod touch. If you are exploring programming for the iPhone as an option, the following frequently asked questions by beginners might be useful to you.

1. What kind of app can be run on iPhone?

You can develop native app to run on iPhone, or you can develop web app that runs on mobile Safari browser on the iPhone. In general, iPhone app refer to the native app. iPhone native app is the only app you can sell on iTunes App Store.

Native iPhone apps are by far the dominant apps on the iPhone with native iPhone touch interface and experience. Many vendor develops native iPhone app for their website, such as Facebook, MySpace and NY Times. On the other hand, popular web apps customize for iPhone include GMail and Flickr.

2. What programming language can I use?

The only programming language you use for developing native iPhone app is Objective-C. Objective-C is an object-oriented extension to the C programming language, it is also the main language for developing Cocoa apps on Mac OS X.

For web apps, you can use standard web programming languages such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Safari browser on iPhone has similar capability compared with its desktop counterpart, and it is one of the most compliance browsers on the market. Please note that certain browser extension such as Adobe Flash is not supported on iPhone. We do not see these technologies on iPhone anytime soon.

3. What do I need to get started?

The software you need to get started in programming are Xcode and iPhone SDK.

Xcode is a programming Integrated Development Environment (IDE) that consists of editor, compiler and debugger, all integrated in one application. It is free with each copy of Mac OS X. You can install it from your Mac OS X system disc, under the optional installs option. You can use Xcode to develop for iPhone and create Cocoa app for Mac OS X.

You can download iPhone SDK and also Xcode from Apple Developer Connection. The iPhone SDK includes all the tools and libraries for creating iPhone app. It comes with an iPhone emulator for testing and debugging your iPhone app on the Mac.

4. Is Apple Developer Connection membership free?

Apple Developer Connection membership is free. After signup, you can download the latest Xcode and iPhone SDK to start programming.

However if you want to run your app on your iPhone device and sell your iPhone app on the App Store, you need to enroll into iPhone Developer Program which is $99 yearly for the Standard Program. Standard Program allows you to test and run your app on your iPhone and sell your app on the App Store. The other Enterprise Program at $299 yearly is for companies building in-house app.

You should use Xcode and the emulator for learning and programming. Enroll into iPhone Developer Program when your app is ready. It takes from 1 week to a month for the enrollment process.

5. Do I need Xcode, iPhone SDK and iPhone Developer Program for developing web app?

No. You do not need Xcode, iPhone SDK and iPhone Developer Program if you are developing web app. Web app on iPhone is just any other web app, customize to fit the small screen of iPhone.

6. How do I transfer my app to the iPhone?

You can not simply compiled your app from Xcode and push it to your iPhone. iPhone app requires digital certificate obtained from the iPhone Developer Program website in order to run on iPhone. Your iPhone device also need to register its device serial number into the iPhone Developer Program in order to run and test your app. iPhone Developer Program includes detail PDFs and videos to guide you on each step.

7. How do I distribute my app to the App Store?

Apple provides a web portal on the iPhone Developer Program for you to submit your app, screenshots etc for the App Store. Detail instructions and guidelines are provided. Apple will review and approve your app for the App Store. It takes an average 2 weeks to a month for the approval process if Apple never reject your app.

8. Can I sell iPhone app as individual?

Yes. During the iPhone Developer Program enrollment, you need to choose if you want to signup as Standard Program Individual or Standard Program Company.

9. How do I get paid?

When you are submitting your first non-free app to the App Store for review, Apple requires your bank and account info. You can view your sales report from the iPhone Developer Program website. On a monthly basis, the sales will be wired to your bank account.

10. Can I develop iPhone app on Windows?

No. You need a Mac in order to program for iPhone.

11. What are the resources for learning Objective-C and iPhone SDK?

The best resource is from Apple. You can find videos, samples and SDK documentation as an Apple Developer Connection (the free program) members.

The books you need:

iPhone keyboard’s Auto-Correction feature is time-saver and great help for people who are not used to touch typing. iPhone suggests word as you type when the word is not in the keyboard dictionary. You tap the “X” next to a suggested word to reject the correction, and iPhone will add your word into the keyboard dictionary. Your word will then not show up for correction again.

In due course, you have high probability of messing up the keyboard dictionary. For example if you spell “dont” without an apostrophe and reject the suggested correction for a few times, iPhone keyboard will add “dont” into the keyboard dictionary and will not suggest correction for you subsequently.

To erase all the words you added to the keyboard dictionary:

Settings > General > Reset > Reset Keyboard Dictionary

Select “Reset Dictionary” to clear your words and reset the keyboard dictionary to factory default.

Apple actually posted a support article last modified June 25 that offers tips on how to keep iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS within acceptable operating temperatures.

Operate iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS in a place where the temperature is between 0º and 35º C (32º to 95º F). Low- or high-temperature conditions might temporarily shorten battery life or cause the device to temporarily stop working properly. Store iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS in a place where the temperature is between -20º and 45º C (-4º to 113º F). Don’t leave the device in your car, because temperatures in parked cars can exceed this range.

Keeping iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS within acceptable operating temperatures

Last Modified: June 25, 2009
Article: HT2101

Summary
Learn about the operating temperatures and temperature management of iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS.

Products Affected
iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS

Operate iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS in a place where the temperature is between 0º and 35º C (32º to 95º F). Low- or high-temperature conditions might temporarily shorten battery life or cause the device to temporarily stop working properly.

Store iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS in a place where the temperature is between -20º and 45º C (-4º to 113º F). Don’t leave the device in your car, because temperatures in parked cars can exceed this range.

If the interior temperature of the device exceeds normal operating temperatures, you may experience the following as it attempts to regulate its temperature:

The device stops charging

Display dims

Weak cellular signal

Temperature warning screen appears with the message “iPhone needs to cool down before you can use it” (see image below)

This message appears when the operating temperature has become too hot. This is a safety mechanism that protects the components of your device. If this message appears, you should turn the device off, move it to a cooler environment, and allow it to cool before resuming use.

Note: When this message appears, the device may still be able to make emergency calls.

Some conditions and activities that may activate the Temperature warning message:

Leaving the device in a car on a hot day.

Leaving it in direct sunlight for extended amounts of time.

Using certain applications in hot conditions or direct sunlight for long periods of time, such as GPS tracking in a car on a sunny day or listening to music while in direct sunlight.

Safety Standards:
iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS comply with the safety standard for Safety of Information Technology Equipment, IEC 60950-1.

This safety standard has been adopted by many countries and is referred to as the following:

UL 60950-1 in the United States

CSA 60950-01 in Canada

EN60950-1 in Europe

AS/NZS 60950:1 in Australia and New Zealand.

Google Android, Nokia Symbian OS, Windows Mobile and the new Palm webOS will be among the first devices to support web browsing with the newest Flash Player.

Apple iPhone and RIM Blackberry are the two notable names missing. But do we really need Flash Player on iPhone? It has been over two years of iPhone without Flash and we certainly do not miss it. Flash Player is good to have provided it does not jeopardize the overall performance and responsiveness of iPhone. What do you think?

Apple’s App Store pioneered the managed mobile application marketplace, even though Apple is one of the last major players to enter the smartphone race. App Store has so far surpassed expectation with its billion downloads recently and is one of the major differentiating feature of iPhone compared with other smartphone platform.

The overwhelming success of App Store spurs other vendors to develop their own store in order to compete. In case you are confused by the different naming for app stores, here is the list of Apple App Store’s competitors:

App World

BlackBerry launched App World in Apr. Visit the store.

Android Market

Android Market for Google Android based phones was launched in Oct 2008, with the availability of paid apps from Feb this year for US market.

App Catalog

This could be the name for Palm’s app store for its webOS devices, nothing is confirmed until Palm Pre’s official debut, which should be anytime now. But there is no indication if Palm’s app store will be available together with the launch of the first webOS phone.

Ovi Store

Nokia’s Ovi branding is more than just a store, the Ovi website encompasses other phone services such as contacts and calendar sync to the internet cloud, similar to what is being offered in MobileMe and Microsoft’s MyPhone.

Nokia on Monday began rolling out its Ovi Store to production servers, and is live today worldwide for Nokia phone owners. TechCrunch took a spin and called the launch a complete disaster.

Windows Marketplace for Mobile

Microsoft has yet to launch its Windows Marketplace for Mobile app store for Windows Mobile platform, but you can’t help but notice the store has the longest name among all the app stores, just like most of other Microsoft products. We suspect the branding is from the same marketing team behind Windows Vista.

Too many app stores for our money indeed. Will there be app store from Sony Ericsson or even Motorola?

Updated June 03, 2009 – Sony Ericsson announced their PlayNow Arena app store

iPhone is the first phone with a full-blown browser. Some has labelled the Safari browser on the iPhone as the ‘killer app’, attributed it as the key factor that enabled the mobile web. With its touch interface and ease of navigation, it is no longer a tedious chore surfing the net on smartphone. Here are 14 tips for getting the most out of Safari browser on your iPhone.

1. Auto Web Address Resolution

When you enter a URL in the address bar, you don’t have to type “http”, “www” or “.com”. Safari will automatically resolve the web address. Example for “www.apple.com”, just type “apple” in the address bar will get you to Apple’s homepage. This will work for most websites that end with “.com” domain.

2. Scroll to Top of Page for Address and Search Bar

Safari will scroll the Address and Search Bar together with web page. When a page is more than a screenful, you can quickly scroll to the top of the page to access the Address and Search Bar by tapping on the status bar.

3. Tap and Hold “.com” for Other Domains

When entering web address, tap and hold the “.com” key to display options for other domain extensions such as “.net”, “.edu”, “.org” etc. Slide your finger from “.com” to select the other domain extension.

Safari’s onscreen keyboard is bigger when iPhone is in horizontally position. If you are holding iPhone vertically, rotate iPhone horizontally first before you tap the address bar to summon the keyboard. The larger keys make data entry easier.

5. Double Tap Text to Auto Zoom In

Instead of pinching the screen to zoom in, you can quickly zoom in and enlarge the text display by double tapping on an area of the text. Safari will automatically zoom in the text to fit the width of the screen. This might not work on all pages as it depends on the formatting of the web page.

6. View Text in Landslide

When text is too small to read, you can rotate the iPhone horizontally to read the page in landslide mode. This is one quick way to make text more readable without doing the pinches to zoom in.

7. Save Image To Camera Roll

To save any image on the web page, tap and hold the image. A menu will display with option to save the image to the camera roll.

8. Create App Icon in Home Screen

You can add an app icon for any website to your iPhone Home Screen. Tapping on the app icon will launch Safari together with the website.

To add an app icon, tap the “+” button at bottom while browsing the website on Safari. Select the “Add to Home Screen” option.

Safari will use the Apple touch icon if the website supply one. If not Safari will use a screenshot of the page for the icon. You can change the screenshot by zooming in to a particular item on the page, such as website logo or picture, before you tap the “+” button and select “Add to Home Screen”.

9. Click and Hold URL Link for More Info

Tap and hold an URL link will produce a ballon that displays the underlying web address. This is useful if you want to confirm the address before tapping it.

10. Email URL Link

To email the URL address of the page you are viewing, tap the “+” button at the bottom and select the “Mail Link To This Page” option.

11. Make a call from Safari

When a web page contains a phone number and is formatted as a link, you can call the number on your iPhone by tapping on the number. There is no need to copy the number and dial it manually.

This will work for websites that format phone numbers using the tel: hyperlink RFC 3966 standard.

12. Change Your Search Engine

The default search engine in Safari is Google. You can choose to use other search engine by going into Settings->Safari->Seach Engine. Unfortunately there is not much choice, you have “Yahoo!” as the only other option.
