We predicted that the 4th generation iPhone will be capable of 720p HD video. This is more or less confirmed by the sighting of internal preset value in iPhone 4 beta SDK of “AVCaptureSessionPreset1280x720″ where 1280×720 is the resolution of 720p HD video. 720p HD recording is required in order to keep 4th generation iPhone [...]

720p HD recording is required in order to keep 4th generation iPhone competitive. How about current iPhone 3GS? iPhone 3GS currently records at VGA resolution but it is well known that the camera within the hardware is capable of 720p HD capture. Will iPhone OS 4 be able to unlock this capability? Will we get a surprise gift from Apple?

If you are curious about the 4th generation iPhone, you probably have read the leak by Gizmodo on the next iPhone. The prototype iPhone unit is confirmed real as Apple has sent a letter formally requesting the return of the device. Here is a listing of what we can expect on the 4G iPhone from the Gizmodo leak as well as from other sources and our prediction.

Apple is expected to unveil iPhone 4G at its developer event WWDC which is rumored for June 28-July 02. Following the release pattern of past iPhones, it should be out in July. But we might get it in June as AT&T has blocked vacations for staff in June, said to be preparing for the launch of iPhone 4G.

iPhone 4G will have new design resembles the industrial look of iPad and MacBook, with a more square tapered corners. The back is flat unlike current models and is made of glass or glass like material. An aluminum border is around the sides, and the power, mute and volume buttons are all metallic. There are now two buttons for volume. And there is a new secondary mic at the top next to the headphone jack, believed is for noise cancellation purpose.

iPhone 4G is about 3g lighter, has a battery that is 16% larger than iPhone 3GS. It uses Micro-SIM similar to iPad.

There is a front-facing camera, and is obviously meant for video chat. The back camera is noticeably larger than iPhone 3GS and there is now flash. Many expect iChat to be a standard app in 4G iPhone. As for the camera, expect it to be with a 5MP sensor. And the next-gen iPhone will likely capture video in HD 720p format.

The screen appears to be slightly smaller than current model. It is rumored to have a resolution of 960×640, double that of current models. Higher resolution per inch means text will looks crispier. We expect there will be great jump in graphics performance compared to current models, as games is crucial to iPhone.

We suspect Apple might include RFID sensor into the 4G iPhone. RFID is a near field identification standard that will open to endless possibility of industrial applications for iPhone.

Apple is likely to use its custom chipset for the next gen iPhone, similar to iPad where Apple A4 chip is used. We bet the same A4 will make it into iPhone 4G. And judging from the 16% larger battery area reported by Gizmodo, we can expect long battery life will be a feature touted about during the launch.

It is a foregone conclusion that the 4G iPhone runs iPhone OS 4.0. Apple released a beta SDK of iPhone 4.0 to its developer early this month. The biggest feature in iPhone OS 4.0 is the ability to multitask apps. This open many possibilities in apps, for example ability to receive Skype calls.

There are minor tweaks to the home screen. Double tap on button will display currently running apps at the bottom for scrolling, tap on a app to quickly launch the running app. You can create folders to house your apps, this allows you to have up to 2160 apps on your phone instead of the current 180 apps limit. You are able to set wallpapers for Home Screen background.

Mail app will have a universal inbox that display all mails from multiple accounts together.

iBooks will be standard app, allowing you to read your iBookstore purchase on iPhone.

We suspect Apple will release version of Pages, Numbers and Keynote app for iPhone. Apple will timed it with the launch of the next iPhone.

iPhone OS 4.0 supports bluetooth keyboard. So you can expect keyboard docking from Apple and third party vendor that works with the 4G iPhone.

It is rumored that there will be integration of contacts in iPhone with your contacts in Facebook.

Apple has replaced “Google” with “Search” in mobile Safari search box in iPhone OS 4. There will be lesser Google product branding in iPhone. We expect this trend to continue as the love or hate relationship between Apple and Google is ongoing.

Will the next iPhone be called iPhone HD or iPhone 4G? We do not expect Apple to use any “3G” in the product name, as the design is a departure from the last two generations.

There will be no Adobe Flash in iPhone. Last generations, this generation and future generations of iPhone.

There are more than 50,000 apps in Apple’s App Store, many doubt if it is still possible to make money developing apps for the iPhone and iPod touch. If you are exploring programming for the iPhone as an option, the following frequently asked questions by beginners might be useful to you.

1. What kind of app can be run on iPhone?

You can develop native app to run on iPhone, or you can develop web app that runs on mobile Safari browser on the iPhone. In general, iPhone app refer to the native app. iPhone native app is the only app you can sell on iTunes App Store.

Native iPhone apps are by far the dominant apps on the iPhone with native iPhone touch interface and experience. Many vendor develops native iPhone app for their website, such as Facebook, MySpace and NY Times. On the other hand, popular web apps customize for iPhone include GMail and Flickr.

2. What programming language can I use?

The only programming language you use for developing native iPhone app is Objective-C. Objective-C is an object-oriented extension to the C programming language, it is also the main language for developing Cocoa apps on Mac OS X.

For web apps, you can use standard web programming languages such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Safari browser on iPhone has similar capability compared with its desktop counterpart, and it is one of the most compliance browsers on the market. Please note that certain browser extension such as Adobe Flash is not supported on iPhone. We do not see these technologies on iPhone anytime soon.

3. What do I need to get started?

The software you need to get started in programming are Xcode and iPhone SDK.

Xcode is a programming Integrated Development Environment (IDE) that consists of editor, compiler and debugger, all integrated in one application. It is free with each copy of Mac OS X. You can install it from your Mac OS X system disc, under the optional installs option. You can use Xcode to develop for iPhone and create Cocoa app for Mac OS X.

You can download iPhone SDK and also Xcode from Apple Developer Connection. The iPhone SDK includes all the tools and libraries for creating iPhone app. It comes with an iPhone emulator for testing and debugging your iPhone app on the Mac.

4. Is Apple Developer Connection membership free?

Apple Developer Connection membership is free. After signup, you can download the latest Xcode and iPhone SDK to start programming.

However if you want to run your app on your iPhone device and sell your iPhone app on the App Store, you need to enroll into iPhone Developer Program which is $99 yearly for the Standard Program. Standard Program allows you to test and run your app on your iPhone and sell your app on the App Store. The other Enterprise Program at $299 yearly is for companies building in-house app.

You should use Xcode and the emulator for learning and programming. Enroll into iPhone Developer Program when your app is ready. It takes from 1 week to a month for the enrollment process.

5. Do I need Xcode, iPhone SDK and iPhone Developer Program for developing web app?

No. You do not need Xcode, iPhone SDK and iPhone Developer Program if you are developing web app. Web app on iPhone is just any other web app, customize to fit the small screen of iPhone.

6. How do I transfer my app to the iPhone?

You can not simply compiled your app from Xcode and push it to your iPhone. iPhone app requires digital certificate obtained from the iPhone Developer Program website in order to run on iPhone. Your iPhone device also need to register its device serial number into the iPhone Developer Program in order to run and test your app. iPhone Developer Program includes detail PDFs and videos to guide you on each step.

7. How do I distribute my app to the App Store?

Apple provides a web portal on the iPhone Developer Program for you to submit your app, screenshots etc for the App Store. Detail instructions and guidelines are provided. Apple will review and approve your app for the App Store. It takes an average 2 weeks to a month for the approval process if Apple never reject your app.

8. Can I sell iPhone app as individual?

Yes. During the iPhone Developer Program enrollment, you need to choose if you want to signup as Standard Program Individual or Standard Program Company.

9. How do I get paid?

When you are submitting your first non-free app to the App Store for review, Apple requires your bank and account info. You can view your sales report from the iPhone Developer Program website. On a monthly basis, the sales will be wired to your bank account.

10. Can I develop iPhone app on Windows?

No. You need a Mac in order to program for iPhone.

11. What are the resources for learning Objective-C and iPhone SDK?

The best resource is from Apple. You can find videos, samples and SDK documentation as an Apple Developer Connection (the free program) members.

The books you need:

One of the main new feature in iPhone 3GS is VGA video recording. It is crazy to think that Apple is capable of generating so much excitement with a feature that was available 2 years ago in its competitor’s smartphones. So far video recording in iPhone 3GS has received nothing but overwhelming positive reviews. If you follow TechCrunch and its sibling CrunchGear and MobileCrunch blogs, there are no less than six posts touting the video feature of iPhone 3GS (links at end of this post).

Tech product and gadget should always be technological advanced. Not so according to Apple. If Apple were to follow the tech trend, we would get a 8MP camera with 720 HD video recording in iPhone 3GS. If iPhone 3GS has 720 HD video recording, battery life will certainly be impacted. There will be a need for more storage space. iPhone will need higher graphics capability for HD video editing. More bandwidth is required for video upload to YouTube.

Instead, designers at Apple strives for balance between features and ease of use. Ease of use in terms of giving iPhone users the best experience and camera quality.

VGA recording has been available in Nokia and Sony Ericsson smartphones before Apple even released the first iPhone. Their latest smartphones commonly have 8M pixels or more camera and 720HD video recording. But it is iPhone 3GS that starts the ball rolling to making video an ubiquitous format for sharing on the web. All thanks to how easy it is for one to edit video and upload to the net all within iPhone 3GS. Brilliant video quality and the video recording software in iPhone 3GS are what sets it apart from the competitors.

Smartphones are not the only market iPhone 3GS will win over. Camcorder manufacturer should be concerned too as iPhone 3GS is now a viable replacement for VGA camcorder.

iPhone keyboard’s Auto-Correction feature is time-saver and great help for people who are not used to touch typing. iPhone suggests word as you type when the word is not in the keyboard dictionary. You tap the “X” next to a suggested word to reject the correction, and iPhone will add your word into the keyboard dictionary. Your word will then not show up for correction again.

In due course, you have high probability of messing up the keyboard dictionary. For example if you spell “dont” without an apostrophe and reject the suggested correction for a few times, iPhone keyboard will add “dont” into the keyboard dictionary and will not suggest correction for you subsequently.

To erase all the words you added to the keyboard dictionary:

Settings > General > Reset > Reset Keyboard Dictionary

Select “Reset Dictionary” to clear your words and reset the keyboard dictionary to factory default.

Reports has been appearing last week that the new iPhone 3GS could be prone to overheating. It remains to be seen if it is due to incorrect usage by users, a design defect on Apple’s part or a common problem to all smartphone devices.

Apple actually posted a support article last modified June 25 that offers tips on how to keep iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS within acceptable operating temperatures.

Operate iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS in a place where the temperature is between 0º and 35º C (32º to 95º F). Low- or high-temperature conditions might temporarily shorten battery life or cause the device to temporarily stop working properly. Store iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS in a place where the temperature is between -20º and 45º C (-4º to 113º F). Don’t leave the device in your car, because temperatures in parked cars can exceed this range.

Below is the content of this support article from Apple:

Keeping iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS within acceptable operating temperatures

Last Modified: June 25, 2009
Article: HT2101

Summary
Learn about the operating temperatures and temperature management of iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS.

Products Affected
iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS

Operate iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS in a place where the temperature is between 0º and 35º C (32º to 95º F). Low- or high-temperature conditions might temporarily shorten battery life or cause the device to temporarily stop working properly.

Store iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS in a place where the temperature is between -20º and 45º C (-4º to 113º F). Don’t leave the device in your car, because temperatures in parked cars can exceed this range.

If the interior temperature of the device exceeds normal operating temperatures, you may experience the following as it attempts to regulate its temperature:

The device stops charging

Display dims

Weak cellular signal

Temperature warning screen appears with the message “iPhone needs to cool down before you can use it” (see image below)

This message appears when the operating temperature has become too hot. This is a safety mechanism that protects the components of your device. If this message appears, you should turn the device off, move it to a cooler environment, and allow it to cool before resuming use.

Note: When this message appears, the device may still be able to make emergency calls.

Some conditions and activities that may activate the Temperature warning message:

Leaving the device in a car on a hot day.

Leaving it in direct sunlight for extended amounts of time.

Using certain applications in hot conditions or direct sunlight for long periods of time, such as GPS tracking in a car on a sunny day or listening to music while in direct sunlight.

Safety Standards:
iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS comply with the safety standard for Safety of Information Technology Equipment, IEC 60950-1.

This safety standard has been adopted by many countries and is referred to as the following:

UL 60950-1 in the United States

CSA 60950-01 in Canada

EN60950-1 in Europe

AS/NZS 60950:1 in Australia and New Zealand.

Google Android, Nokia Symbian OS, Windows Mobile and the new Palm webOS will be among the first devices to support web browsing with the newest Flash Player.

Apple iPhone and RIM Blackberry are the two notable names missing. But do we really need Flash Player on iPhone? It has been over two years of iPhone without Flash and we certainly do not miss it. Flash Player is good to have provided it does not jeopardize the overall performance and responsiveness of iPhone. What do you think?
