When you use iTunes to sync to iPhone and then to iPad, all new iPhone only apps will automatically sync to iPad as well. Very often you’d desire iTunes to sync only iPad apps to iPad only. Currently there is no way to just check a preference option to do so. In order to sync only iPad apps to iPad, you need to manually deselect the apps before you press the sync button.
The first step is to disable automatic sync when you insert iPhone or iPad into USB port. Select iTunes->Preferences (or Command+,) from the menu. Select the “Devices” tab, and check the box for “Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically”.
Connect your iPad to the USB port of your computer. On iTunes left column listing, select the iPad under “DEVICES”. And on the iTunes main screen, select “Apps” from the menu.
Ensure “Sync Apps” is checked, and select “Sort by Kind” from the drop down list. This will sort apps into three categories:
iPhone, iPod touch and iPad Apps
iPhone and iPod touch Apps
iPad Apps
Categories 1 and 3 are apps that are build for iPad and takes advantage of the bigger screen of iPad. Category 2 are apps that are build for iPhone only. Scroll through the list of apps under category 2 and deselect the checkbox.
You can now press the “Apply” or “Sync” button below the screen to start iTunes sync to your iPad.
Bloomberg is reporting that Apple will begin selling white iPhone 4 by end Apr for both AT&T and Verizon.
The new version will be available from AT&T Inc. and Verizon Wireless by the end of April, said one of the people, who asked not to be identified because the plans aren’t public. The release was stalled as Apple resolved manufacturing challenges, including paint that peeled under heat, one person said.
Updated: Apple has confirmed that white iPhone will be arriving this spring.
If you have an iPhone, do a Google search on the word “tilt” to get a bizarre search result that actually tilts. This trick works on iPhone and does not work on iPad.
Apple has posted iOS 4.2.6 on its site for the soon to be released Verizon iPhone. This is an upgrade to the iOS 4.2.5 demoed at Verizon iPhone’s launch event.
iOS 4.2.6 is only for Verizon iPhone, existing GSM iPhone remains at iOS 4.2.1.
Notes app on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch is a great app for quickly jotting down ideas, to-dos and notes. Starting with iOS 4, you can setup to wireless sync your notes so that you can access the notes on your iOS devices and Mac without manually syncing via iTunes. This feature however is not available for iPhone 3G users.
Notes app is using the email IMAP protocol for its wireless sync. To enable this, you need to setup an email account that supports IMAP such as MobileMe or Gmail (Notes wireless sync is not working using the “Microsoft Exchange” method of email setup under Settings app). From the property setting of the email account under Settings app->Mail, Contacts, Calendars, turn on the Notes option.
If you have more than one email account with the Notes sync turned on, an “Accounts” button will appear on the left top corner of Notes app. Tapping the button will allow you to select the account for the notes, or to view all notes.
Wireless sync of Notes app is automatic provided there is an Internet connection on your iOS devices. The notes will be sync to your email accounts, which you can access from Mac’s Mail.app or web-based email system such as gmail.com.
For quick notes taking while on the move with your iOS devices, the build-in Notes app with wireless sync might be the only app that you need.
Camera app in iPhone comes with a tap to focus feature. You tap the screen on subject you want to focus before the capture.
Unless you have an object that is very near the camera like the flowers in the above picture, most of the time all scene in the picture will be in focus. This is due mainly to the inherent limitation of optics for camera in smartphone. So for most of the scene especially in landscape, there is not much changes in focusing you can notice by using tap to focus.
But tap to focus will also trigger the iPhone camera app to adjust the exposure of the picture. If you have a high contrast scene, tap to focus on the darker area will brighten the exposure. And tap to focus on the brighter area will darken the exposure. Try out this tap to focus feature when you capture your next high contrast scene.
Safari browser comes with Google search as its default search engine. If you’re annoyed by the increasing spam-filled search results using Google, you might want to consider alternative such as Bing.
On the Mac, it is easy to change the default search engine for Safari. Simply click the search icon beside the search area on the right end of the toolbar. A drop-down menu will appear for you to select the default search engine.
On iOS for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, the default search engine is set using the Settings app.
From the Settings app, tap on the Safari icon. Tap the “Search Engine” option to select the new default search engine.
