Apple’s ‘Back To the Mac’ event summary: iLife ’11, FaceTime for Mac, Mac OS X Lion preview, Mac App Store, new 13.3inch and 11.6inch MacBook Air

Apple has just concluded its ‘Back to the Mac’ event. Here’s the summary:

  • Mac made up 33% of Apple’s revenue last year, at about $22billion. It is 3x what Apple did five years ago.
  • Mac has about 50 million users worldwide. Mac grew 2.5 times last quarter, it has outgrown the market for 18 quarters in a row. Mac’s US consumer market share is at 20.7%
  • There are 600,000 registered Mac developers, growing at 30,000 per month. Big developers such as Valve and AutoCAD now develops for the Mac.
  • New iLife ’11: free with every new Mac. Upgrade is $49. Available today.
  • iPhoto ’11: full screen modes, Facebook enhancements, emailing photos, new slideshow templates, revamped books, letterpress cards.
  • iMovie ’11: all new audio editing, one step effects, people finder with face detection, news and sports themes, create movie trailers.
  • GarageBand ’11: Flex time, groove matching, more guitar amps and effects, new piano & guitar lessons, “How did I play?”
  • FaceTime for the Mac beta release today.
  • The next version of Mac OS X is codename “Lion”, which brings innovations in iOS back to the Mac. To be released summer 2011.
  • Mac OS X Lion preview: Multi-Touch gestures, Mac App Store, App Home screens, full screen apps, auto save, apps resume when launched.
  • Mac App Store: one-click downloads, automatic installation and app updates, free & paid apps, apps licensed for use on all your personal Macs. There is a Mac App Store app to buy and download app. App Store apps is access via Launchpad program, which display a grid of apps on your desktop like the iPad. It has pages and folders like in iOS.
  • Mission Control: combines Expose, Dashboard, full screen apps and Spaces. It layers apps with multiple windows in a stack.
  • Mac App Store will open within 90 days on Snow Leopard.
