Apple September 12 event (iPhone 5, new iTunes, new iPod nano, new iPod touch, EarPods) in summary

Apple has just concluded its media event announcing the launch of iPhone 5, new iTunes, new iPod nano, new iPod touch and EarPods. Here are the summary on what’s new:

iPhone 5

  • 7.6mm thick, 18% thinner than before. World’s thinnest smartphone. Weights 112 grams, 20% lighter than iPhone 4.
  • 4 inch screen with 1136 x 640 Retina display at 326dpi. Proximately the same as HDTV’s 16:9 aspect ratio. Screen is taller and not wider for one hand usage.
  • Old apps will run letterboxed with black bar on either side to center the display. App can be updated for longer display quickly.
  • 5 rows of app icons plus the shortcuts icons at bottom. Native apps and Apple apps such as Calendar, Keynote, Pages, Numbers, iMovie, Garage Band supports the longer display.
  • Touch is integrated into the display for a thinner and sharper display. 44% better colour saturation and less glare in sunlight.
  • Ultrafast Wireless with new LTE and DC-HSDPA. HSPA+ at 21Mbps, DC-HSDPA at 42Mbps and LTE at 100Mbps. Max speed depends on carriers and plans.
  • WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n. Supports 802.11n 5GHz dual channel up to 150Mbps.
  • New A6 processor that is 22% smaller and more energy-efficient. 2x faster and 2x graphics performance compared with A5.
  • Battery performance exceeds iPhone 4S: 8 hours of 3G/LTE talk time or browsing. 10 hours WiFi browsing.
  • 8 Megapixel (3264×2448) camera with backside illumination. Five-element lens with f/2.4 aperture. Hybrid IT filter. Dynamic low light mode to give 2f stops low-light performance. Precision lens alignment. Sapphire crystal for clearer and durable lens cover. New image processor in A6 to reduce noise for better color-matching. 40% faster image capture.
  • Video is 1080p HD with improved video stabilization and face detection. Take photos while recording video.
  • Front camera is FaceTime HD camera at 720p. Backside illumination and face detection. FaceTime over cellular.
  • New in Camera app: Shared Photo Stream and Panorama support.
  • Three microphones: Top front, bottom and back. For voice recognition and noise cancellation. 
  • Enhanced audio: 5-magnet transducer speaker for a wider audio spectrum. Voice will sound more natural. Requires carrier support.
  • New dock connector called Lightning. Double-sided to plug in either way. All digital and is 80% smaller. 
  • Same price as iPhone 4S. Contract pricing: $199 for 16GB, $299 for 32GB, $399 for 64GB.
  • iPhone 4 is now free on contract and iPhone 4S is $99 on contract.
  • Pre-orders start this Friday September 14.
  • Shipping on September 21 in US, Canada, UK, Germany, France, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore. Launching on September 28 in 22 other countries. 
  • iOS 6 will be released September 19 next Wednesday.

New iTunes for Mac and PC

  • Redesigned interface.
  • iCloud built-in. One feature: pick up on your iPhone what you paused to watch/listen on your Mac.
  • New mini-player.
  • Available in later October.

New iPod nano

  • 7th generation. 5.4mm that is 38% thinner than last generation.
  • 2.5 inch wide multi-touch display with a home button.
  • Volume up/down, Play/Pause, Forward/Back buttons at side.
  • Bluetooth and FM tuner. Fitness and pedometer built-in. Video and photo viewer.
  • Available in seven colors: aluminium, black, purple, green, blue, yellow and red.
  • Lightning dock connector.
  • 30 hours of music playback.
  • $149 for 16GB.
  • Available in October.

New iPod touch

  • 5th generation. 6.1mm thick and weight 88 grams.
  • Aluminium with brush finish on the back.
  • 4 inch 1136 x 640 display as in iPhone 5.
  • Lightning dock connector. 
  • A5 processor that is 7x faster graphic performance than last iPod touch.
  • Up to 40 hours of music playback and 8 hours of video playback.
  • 5 Megapixel iSight camera at the back. Backlight illuminated, f2.4 5-element lens and sapphire crystal lens cover. 1080p HD video with image stabilization.
  • 720p FaceTime HD camera on the front.
  • Bluetooth 4 with LE. WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n. Supports 802.11n 5GHz dual channel up to 150Mbps.
  • iPod touch loop button at the back to attach wrist strap.
  • Siri on iPod touch.
  • Support AirPlay mirroring.
  • First time color options for iPod touch. Five colors: aluminium, black, blue, yellow and red.
  • $299 for 32GB and $399 for 64GB.
  • 4th generation iPod touch remains on sale. $199 for 16GB and $249 for 32GB.
  • Available in October.

  • New design to improve air flow and sound quality
  • Shipping today as standalone accessory.
  • Included with iPhone 5, new iPod nano and new iPod touch.
