Summary of Apple September 10 iPhone 5S, iPhone 5C event


Apple has just completed its media event in which it unveils iPhone 5S, iPhone 5C, . Running short of time? Here are the concise summary of the event:

  • iOS 7 will be released September 18th. Requires iPhone 4 and above, iPad 2 and above, iPad mini and 5th-gen iPod touch.
  • Keynote, Pages, Numbers, iPhoto, iMovie will be free for new iOS devices.
  • iPhone 5C with colour plastic side and back. Made with hard-coated polycarbonate. Comes in green, yellow, blue, white and red.
  • iPhone 5C: 4-inch retina display, full sRGB widescreen video, A6 processor, 8MP iSight camera with hybrid IR filter and 5-element lens, LTE, dual-band Wifi a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.
  • iPhone 5C: 16GB is $99 and 32GB is $199 for 2-year contract.
  • New Apple made cases for iPhone 5C at $29 each.
  • iPhone 5S: comes in space grey, gold and silver color. With A7 64 bit processor. The first phone in the world to use 64-bit chip. A7 has a modern instruction set, 2x general purpose registers, 2x floating point registers, over 1 billion transistors and 100 square mm die size. 
  • iOS 7 has also been updated for 64-bit to run on iPhone 5S. It will runs both 32-bit and 64-bit apps. Seamless transition for developers. The CPU and graphics are twice as fast as A6. It is 40 times faster than original iPhone. It runs OpenGL ES 3.0 for advanced gaming features.
  • Epic Games demoed Infinity Blade III, the final title in the Infinity Blade trilogy.
  • iPhone 5S will come with a new motion co-processor called M7 for motion data, accelerometer, gyroscope, compass support. There will a new CoreMotion API for developers to take advantage.
  • iPhone 5S battery life is 10 hours 3G talk time, 250 hours standby. 10 hours LTE browsing, 40 hours music playback.
  • iPhone 5S has a new camera with a 5-element Apple designed lens with f2.2 aperture. It has 15% bigger sensor area and autofocus using matrix metering. The flash in iPhone 5S is called True Tone for more natural colour tone flash photography. The new camera has auto image stabilisation, burst mode. Capture slow motion video with slo-mo at 720p 120fps.
  • iPhone 5S will feature finger print sensor called Touch ID. The sensor build right into the home button, is 170 microns thin, 500 pip resolution and 360 degree readability. The sensor is protected by a stainless steel detection ring, which can detect that your finger is on the home button, so no need to press it.
  • Touch ID has deep integration with iOS 7. Beside unlocking the home screen, you can use it to make iTunes purchases by using your finger to authenticate. Your finger print data is stored on the device and not cloud servers.
  • iPhone 5S pricing on two-year contract: 16GB $199, 32GB is $299 and 64GB is $399.
  • New Apple made cases for iPhone 5S at $49 each.
  • 8GB iPhone 4C will stay in the line up, free with a mobile contract.
  • iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C will be available September 20 in United States, Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Japan, Singapore and United Kingdom.
  • Preorders starts September 13.
  • This is first time China gets iPhone at launch. NTT DoCoMo will also get iPhone in Japan for first time.
  • iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C will be available in more than 100 countries by December 2013.
