Announced by Facebook’s Diversity Group, U.S. users can now specify a custom gender as well as a preferred pronoun in their profile.
A new “Custom” option is available in addition to Female or Male when you’re editing your Facebook profile. A blank field allows you to fill in the gender presentation of your choice such as trans, genderqueer, neither, intersex etc.
You can control who can see your gender by picking the list from the “Friends” drop-down box.
You can also specify a preferred pronoun Facebook refers to you as. There is now a “they/their/them” option for those who are not comfortable identifying as male or female. Instead of “Write on Matt’s wall for his birthday”, the text will read “Write on Matt’s wall for their birthday”.
