The Verge just published an article that highlights the fact that Apple is still selling a 2012 Macbook Pro. Yup, the non-retina version of Macbook Pro Apple is currently selling as new is a 2012 product.
The non-Retina Macbook Pro is not the only Mac that is outdated. In fact, the 12-inch Macbook is the only one Mac that got an update this year. Reading MacRumors’ Buyer’s Guide is depressing if you’re a Mac fan. Apple’s best selling Macbook Pro Retina is 446 days since its last release in May 2015. The Macbook Air is 517 days since its last update in Mar 2015. The Mac Mini is 661 days since its last update in Oct 2014. The Mac Pro is 962 days since its first release in Dec 2013.
The standard PC industry practice by everyone else is to update product range when there is a new generations of Intel CPU. The Macbook Pro is basically two Intel CPU generations behind notebooks by Dell, Lenovo, Asus etc. If you’re into VR, please note that none of Mac is able to drive the graphics requirement for VR.
Many wonder and are curious to know why an admired high-tech company is selling outdated tech. And happily so as these outdated Macs are making tons of money for Apple.
Now is not a good time to buy a new Mac, unless you’re aiming for the 12-inch Macbook. Just hold-on for a month or two. Apple is expected to update its Macbook Pro, Macbook Air, Mac mini, Mac Pro and iMac this fall.
