The second generation AppleTV gets its first software update in version 4.1, which adds AirPlay functionality to play along with iOS 4.2 devices. With this update, iPhone/iPod touch/iPad running iOS 4.2 or Mac/PC with iTunes 10.1 is able to stream video and music to Apple TV.
Beside AirPlay, software update 4.1 also adds VoiceOver accessibility feature to Apple TV which will reads the menu and video/music metadata.
Finally iOS 4.2 is out for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. iOS 4.2 brings multitasking, folders, unified inbox, game center, AirPlay and AirPrint to iPad. AirPlay and AirPrint is new to iPhone and iPod touch.
“iOS 4.2 makes the iPad a completely new product, just in time for the holiday season,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Once again, the iPad with iOS 4.2 will define the target that other tablets will aspire to, but very few, if any, will ever be able to hit.”
Apple also announced that Find My iPhone (iPod touch or iPad) service is now free without a MobileMe subscription. The Find My iPhone app will be a free download from App Store and let you easily locate a missing device on a map.
Apple Press Release
Apple has released a new Gold Master (GM) build for iOS 4.2 to its developer. GM is the last seeded release to developers before hitting users. This is the third GM build for iOS 4.2, Apple issued a second GM build for iPad last week to solve WiFi issues.
The new GM build is labelled 4.2.1, suggesting sizable changes to the initial 4.2 GM. Let’s hope it is the last one. We are predicting a general release of iOS 4.2.1 next Tuesday November 23.
Apple has issued a new iOS 4.2 Gold Master (GM) build for iPad to its developers. This signals some issue with the first iOS 4.2 GM release for iPad. A GM release to developers typically becomes the final release. With a second GM release for iPad, iOS 4.2 go live date is ‘delayed’ somehow but should still be on track for release this month.
iTunes 10.1 is out, and you can get it from the usual Software Update. iTunes 10.1 is required for updating your iPhone, iPod touch and iPad to the upcoming iOS 4.2 release. It also includes the AirPlay functionality, allowing you to wirelessly stream media from your iTunes library to 2nd generation Apple TV .
Apple has released iOS 4.2 Golden Master (GM) build to its developers. GM release is typically the final development build before it reaches consumers.
iOS 4.2 brings iPad up to date with iOS 4 features such as multitasking, folders, unified inbox and Game Center. iOS 4.2 also adds new AirPrint (wireless printing) and AirPlay (wireless media streaming) features, and is the first version of iOS released simultaneously for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.
The final release of iOS 4.2 is expected this month. Apple might surprised us with a quick release in this week or next. We can also expect iTunes 10.1 to be released before or at the same time as iOS 4.2, as iTunes 10.1 beta is made available to developers together with iOS 4.2 beta.
Apple has released the first beta of iOS 4.2 to its developers. iOS 4.2 will be released in November for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. This is the first version of iOS that reunited the IOS platforms, with one code base for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.
iOS 4.2 adds multitasking, folders, Game Center, threaded mail features to iPad. These are iOS 4 features already available for iPhone and iPod touch. Features new to iOS 4 includes AirPlay and AirPrint.
AirPrint enables wireless printing via Wi-Fi from iOS devices with no setup, no configuration and no printer driver required. AirPrint will automatically discover printers on local networks and is designed to support wide range of printers from entry level inkjet to high-end office laser printers. HP’s ePrint enabled printers will be the firsts to directly support AirPrint.
iOS 4.2 will include a new Print Center app to allow user to manage print queue. Several native apps such as Safari include the ability to print. AirPrint requires iOS multitasking thus printing is not available for iPhone 3G.
iOS 4.2 will also adds the ability to import .ics calendar files directly to calendar events. Notes app has a preference and you can choose Helvetica or Chalkboard font to replace the Marker Felt font. And Apple iAd will officially debut on iPad with iOS 4.2.
Apple has put up [a page](http://www.apple.com/ipad/software-update/) to highlight the first major iOS update to iPad since its release beginning of the year. iPad currently is running iOS 3.2. While iPhone and iPod touch has been upgraded to iOS 4, iPad users need to wait till November for all the new features in iOS 4. Specifically Apple will release iOS 4.2 in November for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.
iOS 4.2 includes all features in iOS 4.1 which is expected to be released next week Sep 8 for iPhone and iPod touch. Feature such as multitasking, folders, unified inbox and Game Centre are missing in current iPad’s iOS 3.2.x. New features in iOS 4.2 includes wireless printing and AirPlay wireless content streaming.
iOS 4.2 will also be the first version of iOS that runs on both iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. We suspect due to its increased code size, iOS 4.2 might not run on iPhone 3G and older iPod touch models.
