“We Love Our Users”

Apple just ended their iPhone 4 Press Conference with the message that Apple loves their users, and is working their asses off to make all of their users happy. The end of Steve’s presentation is so dreamy that might make you want to shout back at Steve “I love you too”. Here are the summary of the presentation:

* Apple has sold 3 million iPhone 4 since its launch 3 weeks ago.

* iPhone 4 is the highest rated #1 smartphones among press and highest customer satisfaction rating of all iPhone and any smartphone out there.

* Apple is not perfect. Phones aren’t perfect. Apple has been working their butts off for the past 22 days to solve the “antenna” problem. The finding is the signal drop when holding your phone happens to all smartphones. Apple shows test result with Blackberry Bold 9700 (RIM), HTC Droid Eris (Android) and Samsung Ominia II (Win Mobile). It is a challenge for the entire phone industry.

* Apple’s antenna design has a bar that makes it easy for people to notice such phone behaviour. It is blown out of proportion by tech blogs.

* Apple shows pictures of the impressive room and labs used for phone testing. Apple has 17 anechoic chambers for testing, with over $100million investment and 18 PhD scientists & engineers.

* Apple made a software mistake calculating the signal bar display and this is corrected in iOS 4.0.1 released yesterday. You will still see bar drop when you hold you phone, its law of physics.

* AppleCare received only 0.55% users called in about reception issues. AT&T reported 1.7% return rate for iPhone 4 compared with 6.0% for iPhone 3GS for early shipment. Call drop data from AT&T: the iPhone 4 drops less than one additional call per 100 than the 3GS.

* One reason people notice about signal drop in iPhone 4 compare with 3GS: More than 80% of 3GS buyer left store with a case, as 3GS is using the same case as 3G and there are cases aplenty. Apple can not make bumper quick enough thus only about 20% iPhone 4 purchase is with a case.

* Apple will give a free case for each iPhone 4. If you have purchased it, Apple will refund you. This offer is till September 30 and is international too.

* Apple repeats the 30-days refund policy without re-stocking fee.

* The next iOS update will solve the proximity sensitivity problem reported by users.

* White iPhone 4 is available end July.

* iPhone will release in 17 more countries in July 30: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Singapore, Spain, Sweden Switzerland.

Our Take On iPhone 4 Press Conference

Apple’s iPhone 4 press conference is today later at 10am PT. Here’s our take on what Apple will announce in this special event:

* Apple starts the show with its stellar than expected iPhone 4 sales figure.

* Apple informs that iOS 4.0.1 released yesterday gives a better indication of signal strength, and drop calls are significantly reduced due to software fix.

* Apple repeats the admission that holding the current iPhone 4 in the wrong way results in reduce signal strength.

* Apple announces that newer batches of iPhone 4 will add a build-in insulator to protect the antenna from being shorted, thus solving the problem.

* As a result, shipment of iPhone 4 will be delayed. Apple announces that second wave of international launch will be postponed from end July to mid August.

* For existing iPhone 4 owners, they can bring their phone back to Apple to add in the insulator fix free of charge. Or they can simply use a bumper to solve the issue.

* Apple emphasizes that as always customer can return their iPhone within 30-days without re-stocking fee if they are not satisfied.

* There is no recall or free bumper.

iPhone 4 Press Conference and iOS 4.1 Beta

Apple has scheduled an iPhone 4 press conference this Friday the 16th at 10AM PT. No detail is given about the topic, but it probably is about the antenna issue. Will Apple be able to convince all once and for all there is really no issue with iPhone 4 hardware design? Will Apple gives away free bumper? Or a hardware recall (which we think is unlikely)?

Meanwhile Apple has seeded an iOS 4.1 Beta to its developers which includes fixes for the signal bar as promised by Apple. We kind of expected Apple to issue antenna fixes in a 4.0.1 release. But apparently the version number is bumped up to one full point, and the final release is still few weeks away base on past SDK release pattern. One new feature in iOS 4.1 is the Game Centre, Apple’s platform for game scoreboard and social.

Apple About iPhone 4 Reception Issue: It Is Not A Big Deal

Apple issued a press release on the ‘poor’ reception reports for iPhone 4 antenna. Apparently it is not a big deal according to Apple as the statement title did not mention it as an issue to begin with.

[Consumer Reports has an article on iPhone 4 reception concerns](http://blogs.consumerreports.org/electronics/2010/07/apple-iphone-4-antenna-problems-dropped-calls-att-signals-bars-os-software-bugs-glitches-os-os4-iphone4-reception-problems-in.html), and noted that “There’s no reason, at least yet, to forgo buying an iPhone 4 over its reception concerns”.

An actual issue or an inherent phone behavior cooked up out of proportion by Apple haters and competitors? We let you be the judge. Here are the summary of the letter from Apple:

* “So we were surprised when we read reports of reception problems, and we immediately began investigating them.”

* “To start with, gripping almost any mobile phone in certain ways will reduce its reception by 1 or more bars.”

* “Upon investigation, we were stunned to find that the formula we use to calculate how many bars of signal strength to display is totally wrong.”

* “To fix this, we are adopting AT&T’s recently recommended formula for calculating how many bars to display for a given signal strength.”

* “We will issue a free software update within a few weeks that incorporates the corrected formula.”

* “We have gone back to our labs and retested everything, and the results are the same— the iPhone 4’s wireless performance is the best we have ever shipped.”

* “As a reminder, if you are not fully satisfied, you can return your undamaged iPhone to any Apple Retail Store or the online Apple Store within 30 days of purchase for a full refund.”

* “We hope you love the iPhone 4 as much as we do. Thank you for your patience and support.”
