iPhone 4 available on Verizon CDMA network February 10

iPhone 4 on Verizon

In less than one month, United States residents who has been clamoring for an iPhone on Verizon network will have their dream fulfilled. In a joint announcement today, Verizon and Apple announced that iPhone 4 will be available on Verizon network on February 10, ending the network exclusivity held by AT&T since the first iphone on June 29, 2007. Verizon is the largest mobile carrier in US and many has the impression that it has a better network than AT&T. Here is the summary about the iPhone 4 on Verizon:

  • The iPhone will run on Verizon’s CDMA network, Verizon 3G (EV-DO), and not the latest LTE.
  • It does not run on GSM network and does not support GSM roaming when overseas.
  • It does not support simultaneous voice and data as wth GSM due to CDMA limitation.
  • You can use the new CDMA iPhone to provide mobile WiFi connection for up to five devices by using a preinstalled Verizon 3G Mobile Hotspot app. Pricing for this mobile hotspot service is not announced.
  • The antenna on the phone is redesigned due to CDMA, other than that the interior is identical to the GSM version. The external antenna band has one more notch compared with GSM version.
  • The buttons are slightly relocated thus existing iPhone 4 cases will not work.
  • Price is $200 for 16G model with 2 year contract, and $300 for 32G version with 2 year contract.
  • The CDMA version of iPhone is not exclusive to Verizon, which means other countries with CDMA network such as China might get it.

Breakaway with iPad on Verizon

Verizon begins airing its TV ad for iPad on its network, coming quickly after Verizon Stores began selling iPad on October 28. The ad touts the magic of iPad with the power and reliability of Verizon.

Introducing iPad on Verizon. All the magic of iPad. All the nationwide power and reliability of Verizon.

There is  a price to pay for the power of Verizon, as Verizon is promoting its MiFi 2200 MiFi hotspot device bundle with iPad WiFi, and off course the monthly data plan.

Verizon and Apple together? We hope for more surprises come early 2011.

AT&T and Verizon retail stores will begin selling iPad October 28

AT&T and Verizon announced Thursday that they will begin selling iPad in their retail stores on Thursday October 28. AT&T will carry all three iPad WiFi+3G models at its more than 2,200 AT&T Stores. Verizon will sell all six iPad model and will have special bundle for iPad WiFi model with its Verizon MiFi 2200 Intelligent Mobile Hotspot router.

It is interesting to see Verizon carrying an Apple product in its store, signaling the likelihood of iPhone 4 appearing on Verizon network. Major presses such as Wall Street Journal and New York Times are reporting from reliable sources that Verizon will carry iPhone 4 beginning 2011.

TechCrunch Says Verizon iPhone a Done Deal

Sources with knowledge of this entire situation have assured me that Apple has submitted orders for millions of units of Qualcomm CDMA chipsets for a Verizon iPhone run due in December. This production run would likely be for a January launch, and I’d bet the phone is nearly 100% consistent with the current iPhone 4 (with a fixed internal insulator on the antenna).
